Incision scars develop after surgery during the healing process, when joining tissues can become thick or discolored. Although there is no way to completely remove a scar, cocoa butter is an alternative treatment that can help fade its appearance. Even without treatment, recent scars generally fade with time and become less noticeable.

Step 1

Choose a cream that contains cocoa butter. Cocoa butter is a natural emollient with a high fat content that helps to moisturize and hydrate the skin. It keeps the skin supple and skin cells elastic. Choose pure cocoa butter, and select an organic product, if possible.

Step 2

Apply cocoa butter to the scar, after any incision wound has healed. Do not apply the cream to an open wound. Cocoa butter is usually sold in solid form but melts easily on the skin. You do not need to heat up the cocoa butter before applying to the skin.

Step 3

Massage the skin of the scar and surrounding areas in a circular motion for approximately five minutes. This encourages blood flow to the area and allows the cocoa butter to soak deeply in the skin.

Step 4

Apply cocoa butter to the scar twice daily. Most scars fade naturally in two to three years. Cocoa butter can help speed this process along, but it is not a miracle cure. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, no scar can ever be completely removed.
