1. Rest, Rest, Rest
One of the reasons a cold sticks around longer than we would like is that we do not take the time to take care of ourselves. Instead of staying home and getting better, we often try to carry on with our lives as we normally do. Going to work, going to the gym and running errands as we usually do does not allow our bodies to get better. If you want to get rid of cold then you will have to ignore your normal life and stay in to get the rest you need to get better.
2. Sleep it Off
Having a cold means that your immune system is already in a weakened state. Trying to continue on with your daily activities could be making things worse. Driving to work, working for 8 hours and running errands that you do normally takes a lot of energy. This is energy that you cannot afford to lose when you have a cold. Do your body a favor and stay home to get the rest that you need. Sleeping will give your body and mind time to re-energize. This in turn will help strengthen your immune system and get rid of that cold.
3. Don't Forget Your Medicine
Taking cold medicine can help to alleviate the coughing and congestion aches that come with a cold. Visiting your doctor is helpful because he already knows your medical history. Your doctor can then prescribe cold medicine for you to take. If you cannot get in to see your doctor, you can stop in at your local pharmacy and pick up some over-the-counter cold medicine; just be sure to read the labels to see if you may have some sort of reaction to the medication. The pharmacist on duty can also help to answer any questions you may have.
4. Eating for Energy
You are already feeling weak from the cold, so don't make it worse. One of the things that seems to happen when we are sick is we don't eat or don't feel like eating. Your body needs food to fuel itself. Less food means less fuel. This means you have very little energy to fight off the cold. You don't have to eat around the clock, but just make sure that you are eating when you normally would, meaning breakfast, lunch and dinner. This will give your body a better shot at getting healthier.
