According to research published in Scientific American, advice regarding Selenium supplementation varies. While some studies report protection against cancer and heart disease, others show a potential link between high selenium levels and development of diabetes. There is a fine line between a healthy amount of Selenium and taking in too much.

Cancer Prevention

According to studies published on the Nutritional Insider website, selenium intake has been reported to cause a decrease in the incidence of certain cancers. Also, in areas where selenium soil content is low, there appears to be in increased incidence in the same cancers. The specific link between selenium action in the body and cancer formation is unknown.

Thyroid Support

Selenium is needed in the conversion of the thyroid hormone T4 into its active version, T3. Selenium promotes normal thyroid function. Deficiency of selenium can lead to a low function thyroid or hypothyroidism.

Immunity Booster

Selenium is required by T-cells of our immune system that produce chemical messengers needed in the immune response. It also supports other cells of immunity when fighting viruses and bacteria that enter the body. The presence of selenium aides the combat of infections.
