Addiction is described as a compulsive physiological need of habit forming substances such as cocaine, alcohol, pills and many other illicit drugs. Drug rehabs can be very effective and beneficial to the addict looking to overcome these addictions and begin a life of recovery. The recovery process begins with detoxification off the drugs that were abused. The detoxification is typically followed by intense group therapy as well as individual counseling. Drug rehabs offer the addict the opportunity to identify and deal with the problem at hand.

Detoxification

According to MedicaDetox.org, the detoxification process rids the body of harmful substances that have been derived from drug abuse. The most important part of the detox process is the actual withdrawal from the substances. Depending on the type of drug being used, the detox process may be long and painful. Drug rehabs commonly offer a detoxification program to assist the addict in overcoming the cravings and desire to use more drugs. MedicalDetox also states that although detox is not a cure for addiction, a safe and effective detox that is medically supervised will increase the chances of the addict achieving a successful recovery.

Group Therapy

Drug Rehabs typically have schedules which include group therapy sessions. In these sessions, the addicts will speak on topics they can relate to with one another on and give positive feedback as well as constructive criticism. In most settings, there is a counselor that sits in and runs the group as a moderator. These types of therapy sessions are beneficial to the recovering addict as it teaches them a new way to communicate and express themselves in a positive manner. Learning to effectively communicate in these therapy settings will aid in the process of transitioning back into society.

Individual Counseling

Once the addict has entered into a drug rehab, the common procedure is for him or her to be assigned a counselor. This counselor will meet with the addict to establish a treatment plan. This treatment plan is not only for the addict during the stay at rehab, but is a long term plan. This is beneficial because it will serve as a guideline to follow while getting back on their feet. According to National Institute on Drug Abuse, counselors will assist the patient in identifying situations when drugs were used to deal with life's issues and problems and to understand that drugs are not the answer. In addition, counselors touch on subjects that are more personal than what is discussed in the group therapy sessions and is highly confidential.
