Acid Production
Nexium, also called the "purple pill," is manufactured by AstraZeneca for the treatment of acid reflux or gastroensophageal reflux disease (GERD). Acid reflux occurs when stomach acids flow back up the esophagus, causing a burning sensation in the chest and throat area, referred to as heartburn. The lower esophageal sphincter (LES) acts as a flap that keeps acid, food and bile in the stomach after it has been consumed. There are various reasons why the LES becomes relaxed or weakened and allows these fluids to flow back up the esophagus. Mayo Clinic points out that it is often effective to treat the cause of acid instead of repairing the LES unless it is medically necessary. One form of treatment for the acid is Nexium.
Acid Reduction
Esomeprazole is the active ingredient in Nexium. According to PurplePill.com, this ingredient works to inhibit the production of stomach acid. This is done by ceasing the actions of the proton pump, according to Drugs.com. The proton pump is the acid-producing system within the stomach. Esomeprazole causes a chemical reaction in the parietal cells to prevent them from their normal expulsion of acid, according to RxList.com. The parietal cells are located within the proton pump system. With a diminished production of acid, the levels will be lower in the stomach and thus the LES will have less acid to hold back.
Repair Work
Individuals can also be prescribed this medication to repair stomach and esophageal damage from acid reflux. By decreasing the production of corrosive acid, the erosion of the esophagus will be allowed to heal. Only your doctor can confirm if there has been erosion within the esophagus. Damage left untreated can potentially lead to other serious health problems. If this type of damage applies to you, your doctor may have given a diagnosis of erosive esophagitis. Per Nexium, the erosion in the lining of the esophagus can heal within four to eight weeks of starting a medication regimen and it can continue for up to six months to maintain the repairs.
