As more consumers learn about the chemical compounds in their body care products, herbal remedies and beauty products are becoming popular. Naturopathic physician Dr. Edward Group of the Global Healing Center warns that aluminum-based antiperspirants may contribute to Alzheimer's disease and breast cancer. On the other hand, National Cancer Institute researchers report that no conclusive evidence has linked antiperspirants to cancer. Whatever your reasons for choosing a natural deodorant, making your own at home can be economical and fun.

Step 1

Heat water and cider vinegar to just below boiling.

Step 2

Remove the pan from heat and add 15 drops of sage essential oil and 15 drops of lavender. You can also use 3 tbsp. each of dried sage and lavender. If you choose the latter, put them into the pan and cover the pan with a lid, allowing the herbs to steep until the mixture cools.

Step 3

Pour the mixture through a funnel into a clean glass bottle. If you used dried herbs, strain the mixture through a colander into a glass bowl before adding it to the bottle.

Step 4

Add 1/4 cup of witch hazel to the deodorant and shake well.

Step 5

Close the bottle with a sprayer or rubber stopper. Spray the deodorant onto your armpits or splash it on. Because it contains no preservatives, storing it in the refrigerator will help it last longer.

Tips and Warnings

  • To help inhibit wetness and further control odor, pat baking soda onto your armpits once your deodorant has dried.
