There is not a 100 percent way to keep from losing hair at any stage in life, since 10 percent of our hair is always in resting or shedding phase, according to the FamilyDoctor website. Some things such as hormonal changes and illness can cause more hair than normal to rest, which is called telogen effluvium. In addition to this, women in menopause begin to notice pattern-hair loss--androgenic alopecia--which results in defusing hair all over the scalp. The good news is there are ways to reduce the amount of hair lost during menopause.
Step 1
Take hormone replacements. Hair loss in menopause is due to a decline in female hormones which leaves a higher than usual number of male hormones, according to the American Hair Loss Association. This decline leaves an imbalance in female and male hormones, which results in hair thinning. Taking estrogen supplements can slow down hair loss.
Step 2
Use Rogaine for women. Rogaine for women contains the active ingredient minoxidil, which is used to promote hair growth in people with pattern hair loss. Rogaine for women is sold as a topical lotion, cream or foam.
Step 3
Use a daily moisturizer to promote healthy hair elasticity. In menopause, women may develop dry skin due to the decline of estrogen. This dry skin can also cause the scalp to become dry, which results in hair loss and breakage.
Step 4
Drink the recommended eight to 10 glasses of water per day. Staying hydrated also helps to promote healthy hair and skin. Drinking plenty of water also increases good blood circulation, which may help promote healthy follicles.
Step 5
Use moisturizing shampoo and conditioner. Purchase hair products that are formulated for dry or damaged hair.
Step 6
Take a multivitamin and eat nutritious foods. Women who don't eat regularly or who do not eat a wide variety of meals may choose to take a multivitamin to supplement for nutrients lost. Having a good intake of vitamins and minerals not only promotes healthy hair and skin, but they also promote healthy teeth and gums, bones, brain functioning and circulation.
