Antibiotics are only effective in fighting of infections caused by bacteria. Sinus infections can be the result of bacteria, but they can also be caused by fungi or viruses, both of which won't respond to antibiotics. There are several nonprescription methods of clearing up a sinus infection that focus on relieving uncomfortable symptoms like congestion. If significant symptoms -- such as a fever over 103 F or wheezing -- occur, seek medical advice. Young children who have symptoms of a sinus infection or a bad cold that last more than 10 days should also receive medical attention.
Step 1
Use a nasal decongestant or saline spray to combat nasal congestion caused by inflamed sinus passages. Saline spray has minimal side effects compared to over-the-counter antihistamine medication, and can thin mucus that causes congestion and drainage. Antihistamine medications reduce swelling that occurs in the blood vessels of the nose when a sinus infection is present.
Step 2
Take an oral antihistamine to reduce sinus congestion, itchy eyes, sneezing and other similar sinus infection symptoms. This drug should not be taken in conjunction with other OTC medicines like a nasal decongestant.
Step 3
Take OTC pain relievers, such as acetaminophen, to reduce headaches and sinus pain that occur when the sinuses become swollen and congested.
Step 4
Increase fluid intake to help thin mucus and prevent dehydration. Any clear liquid is suitable. Broth-based soups, water and even sports drinks can rehydrate the body and make mucus thinner and easier to expel from the nose or mouth.
Step 5
Run a cool or warm mist humidifier while sleeping to make breathing easier. Dry, hot air can irritate the already inflamed sinus passages. Add a few drops of essential oils like eucalyptus or peppermint to the water in the humidifier. These oils can reduce congestion.
Step 6
Make hot herbal tea using eucalyptus or peppermint teas or leaves. These herbs can open airways to make breathing easier. Honey is a natural cough suppressant and can be soothing on a sore throat. Add as much as desired to sweeten the herbal tea. Fresh lemon slices squeezed into the tea can also thin mucus that is draining into the throat.
