Essential Oil Remedies for Acne Scars

Acne vulgaris, according to Acne.org, is the most common form of acne and there are several different types of blemishes including, pustules, nodules and cysts. Pustules are the inflamed bumps with white or yellow centers while nodules are larger, painful blemishes that can last for months. Cysts are similar to nodules but with pus-filled centers. According to TeensHealth.org, acne scarring is a result of picking at, or breaking, acne pustules, nodules and cysts. Additionally, TeensHealth.org advises that mild scars may fade over time. Essential oils can treat existing scars and, per Valerie Ann Worwood, author of "The Complete Book of Essential Oils and Aromatherapy," prevent future scarring.

Healing and Anti-Inflammatory Oils

According to Colleen Dodt, author of "The Essential Oils Book," chamomile essential oil has anti-inflammatory properties while palma rosa, rose and yarrow help heal the skin. Carrot and myrrh also have anti-inflammatory and healing properties. Valerie Ann Worwood suggests a daytime blend of German chamomile, palma rosa and yarrow with Roman chamomile and carrot in an almond or grape seed oil base. For evening she recommends a blend of carrot and German chamomile in borage seed oil. Alternatively, you can blend rose and palma rosa with Roman chamomile and myrrh in grape seed oil.

Antiseptic and Balancing Oils

Lavender and eucalyptus both have antiseptic properties while clary sage, thyme and geranium contribute to the oil balance in the skin. Bergamot, evening primrose and carrot also help balance the skin. Combine lavender and eucalyptus with cider vinegar to make a balancing toner. Mix eucalyptus, clary sage and thyme with lavender and carrot, in grape seed oil, for a daytime treatment. Blend bergamot, carrot and lavender with evening primrose, geranium and eucalyptus, in grape seed oil, for a nighttime treatment.

Skin Conditioning Oils

Neroli, lemon and fennel maintain the condition of the skin. Parsley, galbanum and violet leaf also help keep the skin healthy. Blend together a day formula of fennel and geranium with parsley and lemon, in a grape seed oil base. Make a night formula with violet leaf, lemon and galbanum, in a grape seed oil base, with rose and carrot.
