If you have acne scars, even less obvious scars, they can impact your self-esteem and affect your prospects for jobs and dating, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. Mederma Scar Gel, Mederma's scar removing treatment, can potentially help you reduce the appearance of your acne scars.

Causes

Acne scars form when you experience particularly bad acne, and also if you're genetically inclined toward developing scars, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. Three types of acne scars can form: depressed scars, raised acne scars and hyperpigmentation, which isn't technically scarring but includes marks that can take some time to fade. Mederma recommends its gel for any type of acne scar.

Ingredients

The Mederma Scar Gel includes what the company terms as "all-natural ingredients," including cepalin, a proprietary botanical extract the company claims softens existing acne scar tissue and improves your acne scars' colors, textures and overall appearances. Cepalin is derived from onion bulbs. Mederma Scar Gel's other ingredients include water, xantham gum, allantoin, fragrance and sorbic acid.

Usage

To use Mederma Scar Gel on your acne scars, you should gently massage the product into your scars three or four times each day. It works fastest on newer acne scars. You should use it for a total of eight weeks on newly formed acne scars and for two to six months on existing acne scars. Mederma does not claim to make acne scars disappear. Instead, the company says that using the Scar Gel product will make your acne scars softer and less noticeable.

Results

Mederma Scar Gel users reporting on the Acne.org forums give the product generally good reviews, especially for resolving hyperpigmentation marks. They also note that the product is useful in helping the appearance of raised and depressed acne scars. Several reviewers noted that the product must be massaged into your skin very well, and some said that the treatment flaked off when makeup was applied over the product.

Considerations

Mederma Scar Gel does not contain any of the ingredients that the American Academy of Dermatology considers effective on acne scars. Generally, the Academy says, over-the-counter products tend to work best on very small, inconspicuous acne scars. The Academy recommends consulting a dermatologist for prescription acne scar treatments and procedures if over-the-counter remedies, such as Mederma Scar Gel, don't clear up your acne scars.
