Dark circles under your eyes can give you the appearance of being tired or ill. There are several reasons why you may notice dark circles, including fatigue, insomnia, eye strain, allergies and staying up too late at night, reports Robert A. Norman, author of "100 Questions & Answers About Aging Skin." Dark circles are similar to bruises because they get their appearance from broken capillaries near the surface of the skin under your eyes. If your dark circles are bothering you, there are several ways to get rid of them.

Step 1

Use an over-the-counter eye cream specifically formulated to treat under eye circles. These creams help strengthen the capillaries under your skin and remove the dark circles they can cause when they break, states Norman. Gently apply the cream on the skin under your eyes twice a day using a circular motion.

Step 2

Apply vitamin E oil to the skin under your eyes. Break a capsule open by pricking it with a straight pin. Squirt a tiny drop onto your finger and gently rub it on the dark circle.

Step 3

Wet a washcloth with cold water and hold it on your skin for several minutes to help reduce the puffiness and constrict the blood vessels causing the dark color, suggests Norman.

Step 4

Cover up the dark circles using concealing makeup. Choose a concealer that is peach or salmon in color, recommends Eve Pearl, author of "Plastic Surgery Without the Surgery: The Miracle of Makeup Techniques," because they will more effectively cover the dark color of your skin. Use a concealer brush or your finger to gently massage the concealer into the skin.

Step 5

Head to bed a few minutes earlier each night to help you catch up on your sleep and reduce the appearance of dark circles.

Tips and Warnings

  • Increase your fluid intake, suggests Norman, because it may remove toxic particles from your body that lead to dark circles. Apply eyeshadow to help draw attention away from your dark circles. Use a light color to make your eye appear larger, which may make your circles appear smaller, suggests Pearl.
  • Do not use concealer that is white or yellow because it can intensify the dark appearance of the skin under your eyes, cautions Pearl. Do not use bleaching creams under your eyes because they can cause serious damage to your eyes.
