Razor bumps are the result of irritating your skin when you shave by removing the top layer of skin. The redness comes from extra blood flowing to the area in order to heal your skin. This is your body's natural response to an injury. It's difficult to get rid of razor bumps once you have them, because shaving over them continuously re-injures the area. The best way to stop razor bumps is to stop shaving. If that's not an option, there are several ways to heal razor bumps in your bikini area.

Step 1

Trim your pubic hair with scissors first, so that your razor doesn't get clogged or dull from too much long hair.

Step 2

Shave in the shower, toward the end of your shower, when the heat and water will have softened the hairs and opened your pores.

Step 3

Replace your razor often. A dull blade will irritate your skin, leading to razor bumps. A new razor also prevents cuts and nicks.

Step 4

Apply a shaving cream or gel to moisturize your skin. Do not use soap to shave your bikini area. Look for a shaving cream that contains aloe and apply it to your skin a few minutes before shaving to get the full benefit of aloe's skin-soothing effect.

Step 5

Shave in the same direction as the hair growth, using gentle pressure and even, smooth strokes. Wash off the razor blade after every pass.

Step 6

Moisturize your skin after you shave to avoid dryness and itching, or use a cream containing 1 percent hydrocortisone to relieve redness. An astringent like hydrogen peroxide or witch hazel can also be used after shaving, but avoid any alcohol-based products, which will sting or burn.

Tips and Warnings

  • Pull skin taut so it doesn't get cut by the razor anywhere you may have loose or sagging skin. Acne treatments containing 5 percent benzoyl peroxide can minimize any bumps that occur after shaving.
  • Some people are more prone to razor bumps than others. If you have especially sensitive skin, consider a cream depilatory, which will chemically dissolve the hair. Avoid tight pants or underwear, which can irritate your skin further.

Things You'll Need

  • New razor with sharp blade
  • Shave gel containing aloe vera
  • Hydrocortisone cream
