If you're having trouble losing weight it might be time to have another look at your diet. Eating processed and fatty foods will make you put on weight, while eating too much of the wrong thing or sometimes even too much of the right thing, will also make your waist band expand. There are foods you can eat to help quash your appetite and curb your cravings, make sure you include plenty in your daily diet.

Fruits and Vegetables

Eating five fruits and vegetables a day is an important factor in successful weight loss; they're low in calories and full of vitamins and minerals. Fresh apples, broccoli, grapes, lettuce, peaches, spinach and tomatoes all contain about 80 to 90 per cent water and so will help you lose weight as they'll fill you up for fewer calories. Boost the quantity in recipes like lasagna and chili by adding extra vegetables. Your mind will see a big plateful of chili or lasagna, but actually you'll be eating more vegetables than you realize.

Fish

Oily fish like salmon, mackerel, trout, sardines and pilchards have many health benefits. Compared to meat they are low in calories, but are still high in protein. Their high omega-3 fatty acid content is great for keeping your heart healthy; try to eat two portions a week.

Whole Grains

Whole grain bread, whole-wheat pasta and brown rice are full of fiber. They're digested slower than their white counterparts, making you feel fuller for longer. Whole grains also help your digestive system flow---leaving you feeling healthy and light.

Nuts and Seeds

Nuts and seeds supply energy and serve as carriers for the absorption of the fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E and K. Just a few a day will provide all the health benefits you need. Opt for the unsalted variety to avoid the extra calories and salt in your body and have them instead of chocolate and sweets.

Lentils, Beans and Tofu

These provide a great source of protein, and are very important for vegetarians, who don't consume protein through meat. They are a cheap and healthy way to bulk up meals either as a main component or as a side dish.

Yogurt

Natural live yogurt contains live cultures, called probiotics or beneficial bacteria, which fight bad bacteria and aid digestion. Having an efficient digestive system makes your metabolism more effective, making it easier to lose weight.
