Methadone is one of a group of medications called narcotic analgesics. It is used as part of a therapeutic treatment plan to recover from the use of illegal narcotics in addiction treatment programs. Although not a cure for addiction, it is often used along with counseling and support groups. The methadone is synthetically produced and gradually ramped down in dosage until the addict is drug free. There are 21 treatment clinics, some with more than one location, that use methadone in Chicago. They are referred to as methadone clinics even though they may incorporate other treatment methodologies, according to the Methadone Treatment Directory. All of the clinics listed provide substance abuse treatment and detoxification along with methadone maintenance and methadone detoxification on an outpatient basis with self-pay or private insurance paying the bill unless otherwise noted.
