Home remedies are remedies that have been passed from generation to generation. They are also sometimes called folk remedies. If you have a serious illness, or if you have tried a home remedy but have had no improvement, call your doctor for advice. If you are pregnant or are taking any medications, including over-the-counter medications, do not try any herbal supplements without asking a physician or pharmacist for advice.
Cough and Cold Remedies
The common cold produces symptoms such as coughing, sneezing, nasal congestion and sore throat. These symptoms are bothersome and annoying but usually will resolve on their own within a week. Home remedies can help you to treat the symptoms without resorting to cough or cold syrups, which can have side effects.
Home Remedies Guide suggests mixing honey and fresh lemon juice together to ease the pain of a sore throat. They also recommend breathing in steam from a hot shower to loosen nasal congestion. Herbal remedies that may help with cold symptoms include ginger, taken as a tea or the extract, or cinnamon mixed with water, honey and a pinch of pepper and cumin seeds.
Granny Med suggests garlic and honey for a cough. Mix one cooked garlic clove with a tablespoon of honey and a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar, and swallow. The garlic and the vinegar will loosen nasal congestion, and the honey will loosen phlegm in the throat.
Acne
Acne causes pimples and blemishes on the skin. The Home Remedy Guide has several suggestions for treating acne at home. Washing your face two to three times per day with buttermilk can help to combat blemishes. Grated potatoes or tomato paste can also provide relief from the inflammation. Herbal remedies include a paste made from either fenugreek, turmeric or garlic. Apply these, allow to dry, then rinse off.
Digestive Difficulties
Many digestive difficulties, such as heartburn, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea can be effectively treated at home.
Papaya contains an enzyme called papain that can help relieve the symptoms of heartburn. It should not be eaten if you are pregnant or if you are allergic to latex. Other possible home remedies for heartburn, according to Granny Med, include bananas, apple cider vinegar, almonds and garlic.
Nausea and vomiting can be caused by a virus, pregnancy or indigestion. Some suggested home remedies to consider are peppermint tea, tea made out of ginger root, cold cola, rosemary tea and rosewater.
Probiotics, such as the ones found in yogurt or kefir with live active cultures, can be an effective home remedy against diarrhea, according to Granny Med. Other home remedies include agrimony tea and bilberry.
