Diabetes is a disease in which the pancreas stops or limits its production of insulin. Treatments may include diet and exercise, medication and insulin therapy. In general, a diabetes diet is not very different from the healthy, balanced diet doctors encourage for everyone because it is high in fiber and protein and low in fat with a limited sugar intake, according to Women's Health Resource. There are certain foods that diabetics should avoid to properly manage their disease.
Alcohol
Diabetics should avoid drinking alcohol. Alcohol can cause hypoglycemia shortly after drinking and for eight to 12 hours after drinking, according to the American Diabetes Association. It may also cause an adverse reaction when combined with many of the commonly prescribed diabetes medications.
Starchy Foods
Starchy foods should be avoided in patients with diabetes. Foods like potatoes, pasta, white breads and flour and white rice have a high starch content. These foods cause a spike in the body's blood sugar and should be enjoyed only in moderation. The healthier alternative is eating foods that are high in whole grains, such as whole-grain breads, pasta and cereals. Eating foods that are higher in whole grains helps the body maintain a healthy blood sugar without the rapid rise and drop in sugar experienced after eating foods that are high in starch.
Sweets
Sweets such as candies, cookies and baked goods should be avoided in patients with diabetes. According to the American Diabetes Association, patients can include sweets in their diet on special occasions and still manage their diet effectively by cutting back on the other carb-containing foods at the same meal. Non-nutritive sweeteners may be used in many recipes and beverages, which limits the use of white sugar.
Artificially Sweetened Juices and Beverages
Diabetics should avoid the use of juices and beverages that are artificially sweetened. Drinks such as soda, fruit juices and coffee drinks with added sugar can contribute to the improper management of diabetes. Increasing water intake and eating whole fruit instead of consuming juices may be helpful in maintaining a healthy blood sugar.
