3 Ways to Test for Allergies

1. Scratch Yourself

According to Web MD, one of the quickest ways to test for allergies is to get a skin test done. This is a very common test that can be done in your doctor's office. You can find out results usually within the hour as you should be able to see a reaction to your skin in under an hour. This test starts off by marking a section of your skin to test a potential allergen. The allergen is then placed on your skin and is worked into it by using a tool to help it get into your skin. This test can determine fairly quickly if you are allergic to the substance. If your skin reacts to it through some form of irritation or rising of the skin, it is safe to assume that you are allergic to that substance. Your doctor's office will then remove the allergen and give you suggestions of its treatment.

2. Put on a Patch

Another way to test for allergies is through the use of a patch. Again, your doctor can administer this test. You will basically wear a patch that contains a possible substance that you may be allergic to. The patch is then placed on the skin for a few days to see if there is any sort of reaction. This is a very important test as it will see if just coming into contact by touching or rubbing up against a substance may cause you some problems. Since it will be lying directly on to your skin, you will have to avoid getting the area wet when bathing or washing. You will then have to return to your doctor's office to be re-examined and given an official diagnosis.

3. Check Your Blood

This test involves taking a sample of blood. The blood is then tested to see if your body is producing high amounts of certain antibodies. If they find that your body is producing high levels of a specific antibody, they can then determine what antigen or substance it is that you are allergic to. While this is more comprehensive than a simple skin test, it does cost more than a skin test. You do get your money's worth, though, as you will have a more detailed account of what is happening within your body. If you are not comfortable giving blood, then you will be better off doing one of the skin tests that are available.
