Volleyball is undeniably a sport that emphasizes solid teamwork. In order to score points, teams must communicate and move the ball effectively to their target areas within three hits. By practicing drills focused on teamwork, players can improve on the communication and cohesion vital in game situations.

Passing

Ball movement and being able to hit a targeted area on the court are skills needed for a team to win points. A way to drill players on this is to have two hitters and a setter line up at the net, with the setter in the middle position. Three players form the back row at the baseline behind these players.
The drill starts when the setter hits the ball to the left rear player. The left rear player then passes the ball back to the setter, who tips it to one of the front row hitters. The hitter tips it to one of the three back row players, who then passes it back to the setter as the defenders return to the baseline. The drill continues for a set number of touches or until someone drops the ball. Players rotate clockwise at the end of the drill, then repeat the process.

Four by Two Pepper

The four by two pepper drill is a basic passing drill that focuses on ball control and communication between teammates. Two players stand on each side of the net facing each other. One pair starts with two balls and passes them straight over the net to the opposing players. The opposing players must pass and set the balls to themselves before passing their balls diagonally back to the initiating pair. The initiating pair then follows the pass-set-pass routine. The drill continues for a set amount of time, or until one of the balls drops.

Greed

Start this drill with a full team of six players on each side of the net. Each team begins the drill with 12 balls on its side. A team is selected to serve first and a rally is played. The team that wins the rally keeps the ball. The first team serves again and another rally is played, then the opposing team serves for two rallies. The drill is played for a set amount of time or rallies. The team with the most balls at the end of the drill is the winner.

Kill or Be Killed

This drill teaches teams to work together aggressively to close out rallies as quickly as possible. Begin with a team of six players on each side. The defending team serves to the attacking team. After receiving the ball, the attacking team has three hits to set the ball and score the point. If the defending team stops the attack and is able to return the ball over the net, it wins the point. The first team to win three of five balls is the winner of the set, and the losers must sprint a lap around the court. After the losers run, the teams change attacking and defending responsibilities and repeat the drill.
