Football camp is a popular activity for youth players. Football camps can be for recreation or specialized camps designed to bring out the best in advanced players. Football camp drills typically will teach fundamental football skills in a fun and competitive environment. Passing, running with the ball, catching and tackling are among the skills developed in football camp drills.
Find the Open Receiver
The find the open receiver drill develops the fundamental skill of throwing the football. This drill also develops the ability of the quarterback to read a defense and find an open receiver. Place the quarterback at the goal line and set up 10 to 15 receivers standing still and spread across the field. The receivers should be spaced out and at various distances--five yards to 30 yards--from the quarterback. The coach stands behind the quarterback and points to a receiver as the snap is received, and the designated receiver raises his hand. The quarterback takes a seven-step drop while scanning the field for the raised hand and releases an accurate pass to that receiver. To increase the difficulty of the drill, shorten the quarterback's drop to five steps or three steps. This will force the quarterback to find the specific receiver more quickly.
Strip Drill
This drill develops the ability of players to hold onto the ball while running among defenders. This is an important skill for running backs and receivers when running with the ball. Form two lines of five players, facing each other and separated by one yard. The running back takes a handoff and runs through the tunnel of players. Each player in the lines attempts to strip the ball or knock it out; the runner is responsible for carrying the ball firmly in both arms.
Open Field Tackling
The open field tackling drill teaches the skill of tackling, which is crucial for all defensive players. Mark a 10-yard box and have a running back and defender face each other at opposite ends of the box. On the coach's command, the runner tries to cross the line the defender is standing on, and the defender attacks and tries to make a tackle before the runner can reach the line. Begin the drill by allowing the defender to use and hold correct form with the runner stopping on contact. Increase the difficulty of the drill by having the runner attempt to avoid or shed the tackle.
