Losing belly fat is good for your health as well as your waistline. Excess belly fat can raise your risk of heart disease, diabetes and some types of cancer, according to Dr. Sanjay Gupta. Following a diet that is low in saturated fats and overall calories along with daily exercises will help you lose excess belly fat. Diets that focus on foods that help decrease belly fat will help you lose belly fat quicker.
Monounsaturated Fat Diets
Diets that promote eating monounsaturated fatty acids, MUFAs, can help prevent and reduce belly fat, according to the March 2007 "Journal of Diabetes Care." Foods that are high in MUFAs, such as nuts, seeds, avocados, olives and dark chocolate should be eaten in a small amount with every meal for belly fat burning benefits, notes Liz Vaccariello author of "The Flat Belly Diet." Since foods that are high in MUFAs are also high in calories, keep your portion size small: 10 nuts, 1/4 cup of avocado, 1/4 cup seeds, 1/4 cup of dark chocolate or 10 olives.
Grazing Diets
Diets that promote eating five to six small meals a day, often referred to as grazing, claim this revs up your metabolism to help you lose weight in your abdominals. Tosca Reno, author of "The Eat Clean Diet," suggests eating small meals every two to three hours consisting of lean proteins, complex carbohydrates and essential fatty acids. Choose lean proteins such as lean beef, fish, turkey and chicken and complex carbohydrates such as brown or wild rice, whole grain pasta, bread and cereal, oatmeal and fresh fruit and vegetables.
No White Diets
Diets that promote avoiding white foods claim that this type of diet stabilizes your blood sugar to help raise your metabolism and burn belly fat. Diets such as "The Abs Diet" suggest eating foods that are whole and in their natural forms and avoiding sugar, flour, processed and refined foods. This type of diet also recommends avoiding alcohol, diet sodas, sodas and juices, and drinking plenty of spring water daily.
