A hazard of coloring hair, whether it's done by a professional stylist or by yourself at home, is the drips and drops of dye on your skin that you may not notice until the stains have set. Often the staining occurs around the face and neck where they're most visible. Removing the stains can require either a little elbow grease or chemically breaking down the dye so it can be washed off.
Step 1
Dip a cotton ball in 2 percent hydrogen peroxide and rub across your stained skin. Do not use chlorine bleach as is sometimes suggested. The bleach is too strong for your skin.
Step 2
Soak a cotton ball in rubbing alcohol. Rub the cotton briskly across your stained skin. Wash your skin and apply lotion because the alcohol can be drying.
Step 3
Apply non-gel toothpaste or baking soda to a soft cloth or soft toothbrush to remove the stain. Rub or brush gently over the stain and rinse your skin clean. The slight abrasiveness of the products will exfoliate the stained layers of skin.
Step 4
Apply a light layer of petroleum jelly or baby oil over the area of stained skin and cover with a bandage. Leave on overnight. In the morning, remove the bandage and wash the jelly or oil off with a gentle soap and water. The stain should come off.
Tips and Warnings
- Prevent future staining by coating your skin with petroleum jelly before coloring your hair. Clean up drips as soon as they happen with a wet, soapy cloth.
