You no longer have to live with unsightly bags under your eyes. With a few tweaks to your lifestyle and several inexpensive home remedies, you can get up in the morning looking younger and refreshed.

Identification

Bags under the eyes include mild swelling, saggy or loose skin and dark circles under the eye area, according to MayoClinic.com. Due to the aging process, the tissue and muscles supporting the eyelids weaken, causing the fat in the eye area to slip downward beneath the eyes. The area below the eyes may also fill with fluid and cause the under-eye area to appear puffy or swollen.

Contributing factors include fluid retention resulting from changes in the weather, hormone levels and eating salty foods. Some people find that sleeping flat on their back or not getting enough sleep may contribute to bags under the eyes. Allergies, heredity and dermatitis can also be factors.

Tea Bags

Tannin in the tea creates an anti-inflammatory effect that reduces the puffiness of the eye area. This inexpensive and relaxing remedy is easy to do. Janice Cox, writing on the website for "Yoga Journal, " recommends steeping two black or orange pekoe tea bags in boiled water. Once the tea bags are completely cool, put a tea bag over each eye and let sit for at least 15 minutes.

Sleep Habits

Healthy sleeping patterns reduce bags under the eyes. One of the simplest ways to reduce the puffiness around your eyes is to get seven to eight hours of quality sleep at night. You may also want to place an extra pillow under your head to elevate it slightly; this will prevent fluid from gathering in the eye area while you slumber.

Eye Pillow

Another approach to reducing under eye bags is using an eye pillow. Squeeze in a few minutes of rest and relaxation by placing a silk pillow scented with lavender over your eyes for at least 10 minutes. You can easily make a pillow by sewing two pieces of silk together to make a pocket. Fill with flax seeds and lavender flowers before sewing closed. If you are unable to find flax seeds, you can use short grain rice.

Considerations

See your physician if the bags under your eyes become persistent or if you have redness, itching, or pain in the eye area. A doctor will consider other causes of the puffiness including kidney or thyroid issues, allergies, or an infection.
