Getting in condition for softball is a process that should make all players more confident and prepared to play in games. To make all the plays in the field and get in the proper condition to react quickly on the field, players must know how to move their feet quickly, react to the ball and then prepare for the next play.
Star Drill
Have all infielders take their normal positions on the field. Give the ball to the catcher. On the coach's signal, the catcher will throw the ball to second base, where the shortstop will catch the ball. After the shortstop catches the ball, the third baseman breaks for third base, sets her feet and then catches the ball from the shortstop. As the third baseman catches the ball, the first baseman runs to first, catches the ball from the third baseman and then throws home to the catcher. Do this drill again, but this time the second baseman covers second before throwing to third base. Do this drill six times so fielders are prepared to make plays in the infield, throw the ball quickly and put it where it's supposed to go.
Team Relay
This running drill will get all your players involved and should prepare them to be at their best in game situations. Divide your team into two groups. Place one group at home plate and the other group at second base. Give the first player in line a softball to hold and carry. On the coach's whistle, the first player in each line takes off for a run around the bases. Make sure that each runner hits the inside corner of every base. After the runners have reached the starting point, they hand the balls to the next runners. Continue in this manner until all players have run.
20 Swings, 2 Laps, 20 Swings
In this drill, hitters will build strength and endurance by taking 20 quick swings in the batting cage, running two laps, then taking 20 more swings. Have the batter step in the batting cage and set the pitching machine to deliver a pitch every 10 seconds. This forces the batter to get back into the ready position and swing again quickly. Taking fast swings builds strength and endurance. Putting in two laps around the bases gives the batter a quick cardiovascular workout; taking 20 more swings helps build muscle memory.
