Ephedra was officially banned by the FDA on April 12, 2004. However, if you search the Internet, you will find many companies marketing diet pills with ephedra. These products contain North American ephedra, which contains no ephedra alkaloids. The following products contain ephedra sinica, which has fewer side effects because it does not contain alkaloids like the herb ma huang.

Metabotrol

Metabotrol invokes memories of Metabolife's formula 365, which contained ma huang ephedrine alkaloids. While Metabotrol's marketing and labeling resembles the original product the ephedra content is quite different. Metabotrol contains 25 milligrams of ephedra with none of the alkaloids. Its makers claim the product helps burn fat, decrease appetite, and support weight loss. In addition to a small amount of green tea, Metabotrol contains synephrine, yohimbine, caffeine and white willow bark.

Green Stinger

Green Stinger boasts the highest ephedra content of any weight loss pill. With 27 milligrams of ephedra, its makers have bested their competition by 2 mg. Green stinger mimics the original ECA or ephedrine-caffeine-aspirin stack for fat-burning synergy. They claim such benefits as increased energy, vigor, weight loss, fat-burning, and well being. The green tea in this product is standardized to 45 percent EGCG, a catechin antioxidant shown to increase resting metabolic rate. Green Stinger contains white willow bark (herbal aspirin), synephrine, theobromine, evodiamine and phenylethylamine, as well as4 mg of yohimbine.

Yellow Devils

Another product evoking memories of the original Yellow Jackets, Yellow Devils claim to increase energy, metabolism, and alertness, while targeting problem areas. The product contains 25 mg of ephedra and 300 mg of caffeine. This is a potent dose of stimulants, so make sure not to take more than recommended. In addition, Yellow Devils contain cayenne, synephrine, eleuthero ginseng, phenylethlamine and theobromine. Only one capsule a day is more than enough for those seeking a weight loss boost.

Ripped Power

Ripped Power looks remarkably similar to Twinlab's original Ripped Fuel, which contained ma huang. Ripped Power's sellers even mention the product in their marketing, comparing their product to the original. Old school fat-burning ingredients such as L-carnitine and chromium picolinate are added to this formula. However, 50 mg of L-carnitine may not be enough to get the most from this natural fat-burning amino acid. Most recommendations range from 1.5 to 3 g a day. Ripped Power mentions the benefits of ma huang, which contains ephedrine alkaloids. However, their 25 mg of ephedra does not contain the alkaloids that where blamed for many of the adverse effects seen with ephedrine products.
