Acid reflux is a condition in which acid from the stomach enters the esophagus. The esophagus contains a muscle that usually closes to prevent food and acid from re-entering; in reflux, the muscle does not work properly, according to Jackson Siegelbaum Gastroenterology. People with this condition suffer from indigestion several times a week. Certain foods and beverages can worsen the symptoms of acid reflux and should be avoided or consumed in moderation.
Citrus Fruits
Citrus fruits such as oranges, grapefruit and tangerines can aggravate symptoms of acid reflux. These fruits contain large amounts of acid that can inflame the lower part of the esophagus, according to Jackson Siegelbaum Gastroenterology. Citrus juices can also worsen these symptoms. Some individuals may be able to eat small amounts of citrus; each person will need to determine how much can be tolerated through trial and error. Other people may just avoid these foods altogether.
Chocolate
Chocolate can also worsen the symptoms of acid reflux. According to the McKinley Health Center, chocolate contains the substance methylxanthine, which can relax the muscle at the end of the esophagus. People with acid reflux should avoid chocolate.
Fatty Foods
Fatty foods and fried foods tend to worsen reflux symptoms. Both of these types of foods cause a relaxing of the esophageal muscle. Foods containing high amounts of fat can also slow down the emptying of the stomach, which can lead to additional reflux, according to the McKinley Health Center. Most fast foods can aggravate reflux as well.
Caffeine
Beverages containing caffeine can increase symptoms of reflux. Coffee -- both caffeinated and decaffeinated -- can irritate the lower portion of the esophagus and cause reflux symptoms, according to Jackson Siegelbaum Gastroenterology. Tea and other caffeinated drinks can worsen these symptoms as well. Each person should determine individual tolerance for these products by noting if there are any symptoms after consuming caffeine.
Food with Mint Flavorings
Foods and candies with mint flavorings, such as spearmint or peppermint, may worsen acid reflux symptoms due to the relaxing effect on the muscle at the base of the esophagus. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, people with acid reflux should limit intake of mint and mint-flavored foods. Mint gum should also be avoided, according to the McKinley Health Center.
Tomato and Tomato-Based Products
Products that contain tomatoes can trigger acid reflux. According to the Lucile Packard Children's Hospital, tomato and tomato-based products can increase the production of acid in the stomach, which can irritate the esophagus. Examples of these foods are spaghetti sauce, pizza and salsa, according to National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases.
