Acid Reflux Diet Plan

Acid reflux refers to the regurgitation of stomach contents, which causes a burning sensation called heartburn. Antacids may be taken to relieve the discomfort, but many simple diet and food changes can minimize the reflux.

Meal Size

Overeating can lead to acid reflux because it may force the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) to stay open, according to Mayo Clinic. The LES is a flap that prevents food from returning to the esophagus from the stomach.

Meal Timing

Do not lie down after eating. This allows the LES to relax and let food and acids back into the esophagus.

Foods To Avoid

Monitor the foods you eat and whether reflux occurs. There are many foods that have a high likelihood of causing acid reflux, including fatty or fried foods and creamy, spicy or citrus foods, according to GiCare.com.

Good Food Choices

GiCare.com suggests normal dietary recommendations be followed with only a few exceptions. Choose low-fat foods that are not fried. Non-citrus fruits and steamed vegetables are all suitable.

Substances to Avoid

GiCare.com suggests that tobacco weakens the LES muscles. Alcohol is a harsh chemical and may aggravate the esophagus further.
