According to MayoClinic.com, wrinkles are a natural part of aging. This causes your skin to get thinner, drier and less elastic. One way to defy the aging process is to approach your facial muscles the same way you do the rest of your body. Along with your daily application of sunscreen, try a few firming exercises to keep your face in tip-top shape.
Jumping Jacks for Jowls
To tighten and tone sagging jowl muscles, place your fingertips directly on top of your laugh lines, from the edges of your nostrils down to the edges of your mouth. Smile widely, with your teeth bared. Press down with your fingertips, applying pressure while you hold the smile position. Hold for about five seconds, then release. Repeat the exercise 30 repetitions. Another exercise you can do to lift your jawline targets your pterygoid internus muscle in your jaw and involves opening and closing your jaw. Place your index finger on your chin for resistance. Open your jaw and curl your bottom lip around your bottom teeth. Close your mouth using a scooping motion with your lower jaw. Perform 15 to 20 repetitions.
Eyelid Isometrics
To strengthen your lower eyelid, Carole Maggio, author of Facercise, recommends you perform the following exercise twice a day. Place your index fingers at the outer corners of your eyes and your middle fingers at the inner corners. Apply light pressure as you look toward the top of your head. Make a strong squinting upward motion with your lower lid. Keep your upper eyelids open wide and squint up. Release 10 times while continually apply light pressure with your fingers.
For upper eyelids, relax your brow and open your eyes wide, as you would in a state of shock or surprise. Fix your gaze on a specific focal point and stare for about 10 seconds. Relax and repeat this four more times.
Forehead Push-Ups
The purpose of this exercise is to lift your forehead and raise your eyebrow. You can do this exercise while sitting or lying down. Place your index fingers in the middle of your forehead so they're parallel to the top of your eyebrows. Now pull your fingers down toward your brows and keep them held down. While pressing down, focus on pushing your your eyebrows up. Push up and release 10 times to effectively tone the muscles in your forehead.
