Flax seed and fish oil contain omega 3 fatty acids, which are essential nutrients for cardiovascular, nervous system and eye health. Flax seed is available as a grain that is often added to fortified breads and cereals and as a vegetable oil. The University of Maryland Medical Center notes that omega 3 fatty acid is a healthier, polyunsaturated fatty acid and has three main types: eicosapentaenoic acid, or EPA, docosahexaenoic acid, or DHA, and alpha linolenic acid, or ALA. EPA and DHA are found in fish and fish oils while flax seed contains ALA. There are several health benefits of fish oil and flax seed.

Energy

The University of Maryland Medical Center explains that because the omega 3 fatty acids that are found in flax seed and fish oil are polyunsaturated, meaning that they have more double bonds and fewer hydrogen atoms, they are better energy sources. The body is able to metabolize these fatty acids more efficiently than the saturated fats in dairy, meat and fried foods. Omega 3 fatty acids are also able to boost the metabolism of the body for long lasting and increased energy production.

Cholesterol

The omega 3 fatty acids in flax seed and fish oils also help to lower triglyceride and low-density lipids or LDLs in the body. The Harvard School of Public Health advises that this helps to reduce overall cholesterol for better heart and blood vessel health and protection from hypertension, or high blood pressure, heart disease and strokes. These good fats from flax seed and fish oil are primarily stored in lean muscle, helping to promote efficient fat burning and increase weight loss.

Inflammation

In autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, Crohn's disease, eczema and asthma, the immune system becomes hyperactive and attacks the tissues of the body, leading to inflammation and damage and causing pain, swelling and stiffness. The Harvard School of Public Health recommends the omega 3 fatty acids found in flax seed, fish oils and other sources to help to reduce inflammation and protect the joints and tissues by balancing the immune system.

Mood

Another benefit of flax seed, fish oils and other sources of omega 3 fatty acids is an improvement in memory, concentration and mood. The University of Maryland Medical Center notes that omega 3 fatty acids help to balance glucose levels in the blood. This helps to stabilize mood and emotions and decrease depression and anxiety. These healthy fats are also beneficial for the brain and help to improve memory and concentration.
