The historic town of Bar Harbor is located on Mount Desert Island on the Maine coast. While visiting the town you can get active in the outdoors by exploring the island's wild scenery by land or by sea. Acadia National Park is nearby on the island. From the park's mountaintops you can look out across the rugged terrain and out across the Atlantic Ocean. When you are ready to call it a night you can retreat to one of Bar Harbor's RV parks, whether it is an ocean-side resort or an inland campground.
Seaside Camping
Along Bar Harbor's coast you can choose from one of three RV resorts. From your campsite you will have a view of the ocean where you can see schooners and other ships coming in and going out to sea. If your campsite is not on the water you will still have access at the campground's swimming area. The Bar Harbor KOA, Hadley's Point and Bar Harbor Campground all have pools and full RV hookups. The resorts also offer indoor restrooms and showers as well as wireless Internet service.
Inland Camping
If you prefer a high-sitting campground with scenic views and waterside campsites, make a reservation at Somes Sound View campground. This family campground is set alongside Somes Sound near the center of the island. It features a heated swimming pool, canoe and kayak rentals, a swimming area and hiking trails. The campground at Somes Sound View have full RV hookups, indoor showers and restrooms, dumping stations and your choice of wooded, water-view or waterfront sites.
Seasons
Summer in Bar Harbor is a warm and sunny season, though it has many rainy days as well. As summer passes, fall brings a drastic change in color. From the tops of the island's mountains you can see a range of reds, yellows and oranges on the changing forest canopy. The northeastern seaboard brings winter storms and loads of snow comes with them. Snowshoeing and cross-country skiing among the scenic landscape may make the harsh weather worth it, however.
Activities
Spend the day in Bar Harbor watching whales from one of the research vessels that leaves form the harbor every morning or man your own vessel in a rented sea kayak. Take a guided kayak tour around the island, and experience spectacular and well-earned views of the island's bluffs. Hiking trails abound in the area. From high point to low, much of the island's interior scenery is as spectacular as that of its exterior.
Acadia National Park
Acadia National Park was the first National Park East of the Mississippi River. Located in the center of Mount Desert Island, on the south side of Bar Harbor, the park is home to most of the island's mountain peaks and forest lands. While visiting the park you can hike along the trails or ride your bike on the carriage roads that cross the park along scenic routes. Swimming beaches, climbing rocks and horseback tours are among the other available park activities.
