Saltwater fishing reigns supreme near sunny Gulf Shores in southern Alabama. Located along the Gulf of Mexico, the area offers several options to give your arms a good workout while catching the big one. Launch your own boat and head out to the saltwater, or hire a charter boat and guide who can take you to the prime fishing locations. You can also fish from one of the area's public piers.

Licenses

Fishing in the Gulf Shores area requires purchase of an Alabama saltwater recreational fishing license. As of October 2010, annual licenses cost $21 for residents or $45 for non-residents. You can also purchase 7-day trip licenses, available for $9 for residents or $25 for non-residents. Special prices exist for residents of Louisiana and Florida. Make sure to read the regulations so you know the limits and sizes of the fish you might catch.

Fish to Catch

Species of fish you might catch along the Gulf Shore includes the speckled trout, white trout, red snapper and croakers. You may also catch black or red drum and flounder. Species such as pompano and Jack Crevalle can be caught near the shore. Migratory species to cast your line for include Spanish mackerel, king mackerel and spring cobia.

Pier Fishing at Gulf State Park

Head to the pier at Gulf State Park Pier for recreational catch and keep fishing. The 6,150-acre park features two miles of white sandy beaches for swimming, walking and sunbathing. You can also camp at the park, or rent one of the cottages. Besides fishing along the pier or in the park's 900-acre lake, enjoy a hike, play 18 holes of golf or water ski.

Area Marinas

If you're bringing your own boat or renting one in Gulf Shores, several marinas provide a place to dock as well as offering slips and fuel. You'll find several private docks in Gulf Shores with several more located just a few miles away in Orange Beach. The marinas offer quick access to the Gulf of Mexico. They also sell live bait, groceries and ice. Several private RV parks also offer marinas for guest use.

Charter Boats and Packages

Consider hiring a charter boat and guide to take you to the hot spots on Gulf Shores for half or full days of fishing. Experienced, knowledgeable guides know where the fish are biting, and can help you get your quota for the day. Guides also know the waters, making navigation their job while you focus on catching the big one. Some charter boats provide all equipment for your fishing expedition, so check ahead of time to see what tackle and gear you need to bring.
