Physical changes are a natural part of aging. However, some people show signs of aging earlier than anticipated. As a result, they seek cosmetic procedures such as chemical peels to reverse or reduce the signs of aging. As it is a cosmetic procedure, there are some things a person should consider before and after having a chemical peel to prevent infection and support proper recovery.

Step 1

Visit a dermatologist or cosmetic surgeon for a consultation. At this time, the specialist will discuss the options for treatment, steps for the procedure and considerations for the recovery process.

Step 2

Determine, in collaboration with the specialist, which chemical peel option is best. According to Mayoclinic.org, there are two types of chemical peels, mild and medium, that are utilized regularly in cosmetic practices. A mild chemical peel involves applying acid to the skin to remove a portion of its outer layer. A medium chemical peel involves a stronger acid to remove the outer layer as well as a portion of the middle layer of skin.

Step 3

Choose a date for the appointment that isn't near any other important appointments or events. Redness and irritation typical occur after both forms of chemical peels. Mild chemical peels typically include pinkness in the affected areas for several days after the procedure. Medium chemical peels sometimes require the patient to wear bandages on the face for at least one day. Patients may experience soreness or redness for several weeks after the procedure.

Step 4

Follow the specialist's instructions for recovery. Because layers of the skin are exposed, the possibility of infection is a great possibility. It is vital to keep the skin moisturized and protected from the sun. The treating specialist should recommend a medicated moisturizer as well as the appropriate sunscreen with the proper SPF.
