Some people find moles on the face to be attractive, and others consider them unsightly. No matter where your preferences lie, remember that moles may develop in response to sun damage, which leaves you at risk for wrinkles and skin cancer. Certain types of moles may make you more susceptible to melanoma, which is a type of skin cancer that can be deadly. Develop good sun-safety habits to reduce the chances that a mole will appear, and to keep yourself safe from too much sun exposure.

Step 1

Use sunscreen every day. Before you apply your makeup in the morning or after shaving, apply a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15, recommends FamilyDoctor.org. This is important even on days when you do not expect to spend a lot of time outdoors or on cloudy days.

Step 2

Protect your face from the sun. Wear sunglasses and a hat with a wide brim to shield your face from the rays that may cause moles and skin cancer. Look for sunglasses that protect against UVA and UVB rays for the most protection.

Step 3

Stay out of the sun during the times when it is the strongest whenever possible, recommends Mayoclinic.com. In most places, this is from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Step 4

Avoid tanning booths, which can cause moles and other permanent skin damage.

Tips and Warnings

  • Watch any moles that do develop carefully, recommends MayoClinic.com. See your doctor if any moles develop an asymmetrical, irregular border, change over time or are larger than 1/4 inch in diameter.

Things You'll Need
