The Biosilk website claims that each product included the Biosilk hair care line contains silk, which provides 17 of the 19 amino acids found in hair. The addition of silk to a product smooths the hair's cuticle and adds shine, prevents damage from styling, pollution and weather, and revitalizes and rejuvenates hair with added strength and moisture. Biosilk is owned by Farouk Systems, Incorporated.

Shampoos and Conditioners

Biosilk's shampoo and conditioning products include Silk Therapy shampoo and conditioner, which contain silk proteins and are ideal for all hair types; Hydrating shampoo and conditioner with extra moisturizing agents for dry or damaged hair; Volumizing shampoo and conditioner with vitamins A and E to provide volume and body to fine or limp hair; Smoothing shampoo and conditioner with vitamin B and humectants to smooth frizzy hair; Thickening shampoo and conditioner with vitamin B and proteins to add fullness and thickness to thinning hair; Silver Lights shampoo and conditioner to neutralize yellow and brassiness, and add brightness to white or silver hair; and Dry Clean shampoo, a water-free spray that cleans hair without water.

Treatment Products

Special silk-based treatments available from Biosilk include Silk Therapy, a leave-in hair product intended to repair, smooth and protect all hair types; Clarifying Treatment to remove minerals or styling product residue from hair; Silk Filler, a leave-in treatment to control hair porosity and repair damage; Fruit Cocktail Reconstructing Treatment, a fruit-acid-based deep conditioner to strengthen hair while improving elasticity and restoring moisture; and Sealer Plus, which seals the hair's cuticle layer after coloring and perm treatments.

Styling Products

Biosilk offers three gel products intended to add volume and body to hair: Rock Hard Gelee, Silk Gel and Glazing Gel. Each product provides varying degrees of hold. Also available for styling are Silk Mousse, Thickening Creme and a product called Beach Texture, a spray intended to create "beach waves." Styling products intended to smooth and straighten hair include Silk Strate, a temporary non-chemical straightener; Smoothing Balm and Smoothing Solution to defrizz hair; and Thermal Shield to protect hair from damage caused by styling tools.

Finishing Products

Biosilk's finishing products include Shine On, a finishing spray which adds shine and protects the hair from ultraviolet rays; Silk Pomade, which imparts a sleek look; Molding Silk, which can be used to mold hair into shapes; Silk Polish, a styling wax that adds shine; Spray Spritz, a firm hold non-aerosol hair spray; and Finishing Spray, an aerosol spray in either firm or natural hold.

Pros and Cons

According to the website Beauty Brains, silk protein as an ingredient in hair products has a limited value. Although other ingredients in a product may help improve softness and manageability, silk protein doesn't measurably improve the hair's condition.

GoodGuide.com, a website devoted to providing consumer information on the health, environmental and social performance of products, rates Biosilk products overall with a health score of 5.8 on a scale of 0 to 10. While Biosilk Silk Therapy Treatment and Biosilk Finishing Spray rate fairly high at 8.0, three reviewed Biosilk products, Silk Therapy shampoo, Silk Therapy conditioner and Silk Therapy Hair Styling Smoothing Balm, received scores of 4.0 because of the addition of the ingredient propylene glycol, which, according to Good Guide, raises a medium level of health concern.
