Vinegar has dozens of household uses and is a powerful cleaning agent. The high concentration of acid in vinegar can help remove the buildup of hairspray, gel, natural oils and dead skin from the bristles of hairbrushes. To keep your hairbrushes sanitary and residue-free -- and to extend their life -- clean them with vinegar two to three times a week.
Step 1
Remove as much hair as you can from the brush with a comb, toothpick or another hairbrush.
Step 2
Combine 2 tsp. of shampoo and 1/4 cup of distilled white vinegar in a clean sink or bucket filled with warm water. Submerge the brush in the solution allow it to soak for 10 to 15 minutes.
Step 3
Remove the brush from the solution, and use a comb to remove any remaining hair.
Step 4
Scrub the bristles with a nailbrush to remove any remaining residue, and then rinse the hairbrush with warm running water. Allow the hairbrush to air-dry.
Tips and Warnings
- To improve the smell of the vinegar mixture -- and your hairbrush -- add a few drops of an essential oil such as eucalyptus, lavender, peppermint or tea tree oil. Remove the hair from your brush each time you brush your hair to help keep it clean. Soak two or three hairbrushes and combs at a time to conserve water.
