Boston, Massachusetts, offers plenty of activities for the entire family during the winter months. When looking for outdoor activities, you may choose from snow sports such as skiing, snowboarding, or skating, and when you want to warm up inside on chilly days, you can choose museums with interactive activities or even paint ball.

Boston Weather during Winter Months

The average temperature in Boston in December is 42 degrees, with 3.9 inches of precipitation. In January, expect an average of 37 degrees, with 3.9 inches of precipitation. February temperatures average around 37 degrees, with approximately 3.9 inches of precipitation.

Full winter gear is important since it is cold and snows frequently. If you are attending local attractions, you should wear comfortable footwear or waterproof boots. When participating in snow sports, you will need to be appropriately dressed: hats, mitts/gloves, boots, snowsuits, and sunglasses for snow glare on the slopes. Rental skates should fit snugly to provide the proper support.

Winter Sport Activities

Bluehills Skiing offers skiing and snowboarding for the entire family. You can take group or private lessons. They are open seven days a week except for Christmas Day.

The downtown Boston Frog Pond Skating Rink is open from November to mid-March for family skating.

Museums

Open all year-round, the Boston Children's Museum is designed for children and families, with exhibits on science, culture, the arts, health and fitness, and environmental awareness.

In December 2010 and January 2011, there will be large looms for children and adults to try out intertwining texture looming, blending fabrics, and assembling patterns. From February 2011 to April 2011, there will be an exhibit called "Torn From Home" about the plight of refugees and the importance of human rights. The museum has opportunities for storytelling, dramatic play, an art studio for families to be creative together, a kid-size construction zone, a three-story climbing structure, and a playzone for children from birth to three.

The Museum of Science offers an Imax theater, a planetarium, live presentations, and science and nature exhibits. You can also take a ride in a full-motion simulator from the sea through outer space.

Indoor and Outdoor Attractions

Lookout Farm offers a Winter Wonderland of outdoor activities, including hay rides, face painting, crafts, storytelling, ice skating, and special display lights up until January 7, 2011. At Christmas time children can get their photos taken with Santa.

When you want to go inside but still be active, you can play paintball at Boston Paintball. It has an indoor field and is open seven days a week for players at all skill levels.

Winter Activities

Whether you spend a day on the slopes, skating on a rink, or trying out various interactive activities in a museum, you will enjoy the many activities that Boston has to offer during the winter. A combination of activities such as a morning at a museum, skating in the afternoon, and then a game of paintball makes for a fun day for the entire family. When you are looking to entertain the family during the Christmas school break, choose one activity and location per day or every other day. Enjoy.
