Buspirone hydrochloride, more commonly known as BuSpar, is a prescription drug that is approved by the Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of anxiety disorders, such as generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) or for short-term amelioration of symptoms of nervousness and anxiety. The mechanism by which BuSpar works is unknown, but it is suspected to involve some action with the neurotransmitter (chemical messenger) in the brain known as serotonin. BuSpar does not have muscle-relaxing properties, nor does it produce major sedative side effects. This medication is typically prescribed for short-term treatment of anxiety, that is, approximately for one month; rigorous studies on long-term effects are currently lacking.
Common Side Effects
Some common side effects reported with use of BuSpar include nausea, dizziness and lightheadedness. Other common symptoms are headaches, blurred vision, nervousness and sleeping difficulties or dream disturbances. Other common side effects may include fatigue and weakness as well as a gain in weight.
Severe Side Effects
More serious side effects of BuSpar involve affective, cognitive and motoric symptoms. For example, a depressed mood may develop as well as a state of confusion. There may also be muscular twitches or uncontrolled tremors and a lack of coordination. Additionally, there may be chest pain or problems with breathing.
Special Significance
BuSpar is intended to be used in individuals who are at least 18 years of age. BuSpar should not be taken with monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), such as phenelzine or tranylcypromine; in these situations, the prescribing physician must have an accurate medication history of the patient. BuSpar has the potential to interact with any psychiatric medication or antibiotic as well as drugs that treat seizures. It is advised while taking BuSpar that you limit alcohol intake because it may intensify the effects of the medication. Lastly, do not consume any grapefruit products, because the combination may result in serious consequences.
