What Is Grape Seed Oil Good For?

Grape seed oil is extracted from the nutrient-rich seeds of grapes. Grape seed oil usage has steadily increased in the U.S. This is due to its high nutrient content and broad versatility of use. Despite the potential health benefits of grape seed oil, however, current research does not support the use of grape seed oil as an effective method for treating or preventing any specific health problem.

Antioxidant Properties

Grape seed oil contains high amounts of vitamins such as vitamin C and vitamin E as well as other antioxidant-rich compounds. Antioxidant compounds like resveratrol, flavonoids and linoleic acid work to stop damaging molecules called free radicals from destroying your cells. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, these antioxidants are believed to help prevent the growth of cancerous tumors. Still, research has not yet conclusively proven that consuming grape seed oil is effective in preventing or treating any form of cancer.

Cardiovascular Benefits

Grape seed oil is a strong source of important fatty acids like omega-3s. Omega-3s are known to encourage efficient cardiovascular function by helping lower cholesterol levels. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, consuming food products that contain high amounts of omega-3s can potentially reduce your risks of developing cardiovascular problems like heart disease and atherosclerosis. However, research has not yet proved conclusively that consuming grape seed oil is effective in preventing any specific cardiovascular condition.

Cooking

In addition to being healthy, grape seed oil has a distinct "nutty" taste that is noticeable enough to add flavor to your favorite dishes yet light enough not to be too overpowering. You can use grape seed oil for baking, deep frying, sauteing and marinating. Grape seed has a conveniently high smoke point which makes it great for high-temperature cooking. You can also use grape seed oil for making salad dressings and as a substitute for virgin olive oil.

Beauty Products

Grape seed oil is also used as an ingredient in beauty and cosmetic products like lotions, lip balms, body creams and hair products. According to Chinese Herbs & Co., grape seed oil contains regenerative properties that can help restructure stressed tissues and moisturize your skin. However, research has not yet conclusively proved that grape seed oil is effective in improving skin's condition.

Warning

Grape seed oil should not be used for the sole purpose of treating or preventing any specific health problem. If you are considering adding grape seed oil to your diet, talk to your doctor first to make sure that it is appropriate for your body's needs.
