California, with its temperate climate, sandy beaches and sprawling parklands, can be the perfect setting for a 16th birthday party for almost any teenager. Whether the birthday celebrant loves sports or the arts, there is an inexpensive and fun activity that can make any party memorable long after the presents and cake have been forgotten.
Treasure Hunt
Assemble a treasure trove of fun items, such as gift certificates, inexpensive jewelry or small electronics and place them in a box. Hide the box in a local park, such as San Diego's Balboa Park, a few hours before the party. Have guests meet at the park, and divide them into teams. Give each team clues to the location of the treasure trove. The first team to find it wins and gets to keep the contents of the box. Host a picnic lunch in the park following the treasure hunt.
Beachside Volleyball Tournament
Host a volleyball tournament at your local beach. Huntington State Beach in Orange County has ramadas with two picnic tables that can be rented for $50 per day, as of 2010. There are four volleyball nets nearby that are available on a first come, first served basis. Bring volleyballs as well as prizes for the winners. When the competitors finish their games, have lunch and cake set up at the picnic table.
Pan for Gold
Travel to Jamestown, California, and go prospecting at an 1849 gold mining camp. Choose from panning for gold or using a sluice box, and either way birthday guests can have a little history served up with their adventure.
River Rafting Trip
Raft through the rapids of one of California's rivers. Friends and family can come along for a fast-paced ride down Merced River or Tuolumne River. Go for a single day and end the day with cake and candles, or pack up for a three- or four-day adventure. Whether the birthday celebrant is a beginner or an experienced rafter, there is a trip designed for every skill set.
Top Chef Party
Contact a culinary school about conducting a cooking lesson with a competitive twist. Use fresh fruits and vegetables from one of the state's many local farmers' markets, and have the guests cook a special meal out of the ingredients. Have a taste-off at the end, with the birthday celebrant as the judge for the competition.
