Signs of a Possible Pregnancy

When trying to conceive, a couple may look for the earliest signs of a possible pregnancy. For many women, the first signs of pregnancy can occur before the first missed period, which is of course a sign of pregnancy in itself. Many of these signs, however, can occur with other health conditions. If these signs occur, a home pregnancy test can provide further evidence.

Headaches

Changes in hormone levels can lead to an increased flow of blood, which can lead to frequent mild headaches.

Mood

Changes in hormone levels can lead to mood swings. Women early in pregnancy may cry and be unusually emotional.

Constipation

An increase in progesterone causes food to pass more slowly through the intestines, which can lead to constipation. Constipation is a common early sign of a pregnancy.

Nausea

Nausea is caused in part by changes in hormone levels, but it could also be due to increased sensitivities to smells. Queasiness can begin as early as two weeks after the date of conception.

Food

There can be sudden cravings or aversions to specific foods. These changes in food preferences are also due to changes in hormone levels.

Fatigue

Due to rising progesterone levels and also low blood sugar levels, fatigue is a common early sign of pregnancy. In high enough doses, progesterone can induce sleep. Lower blood pressure and an increase in the production of blood can also contribute to a sense of fatigue.

Sensitivity

The breasts can become tender during the early stages of a pregnancy. They can become fuller and heavier. These changes can occur within two weeks of conception.

Bleeding

There can be slight spotting or vaginal bleeding during the early stages of pregnancy. It occurs when the fertilized egg attaches to the uterus lining. There can also cramping that feels similar to menstrual cramps.

Temperature

Early in pregnancy, a woman can have an elevated oral temperature early in the morning. This is called the basal body temperature.

Dizziness

Blood pressure drops with pregnancy as the blood vessels dilate. This can result in dizziness or a feeling of faintness.
