The ability to slide in softball is important for a variety of reasons. Sliding gets you to the base faster than running in a stand-up position, and it prevents you from over-running a base. It will allow you to steal bases, and also to break up a double play by getting in the way of a fielder as she tries to make the throw. It's always best to slide with your feet first when possible. A feet-first slide minimizes the chances of injury when performed with proper technique.
Step 1
Maintain your speed as you approach the bag. Slowing will cause you to lose momentum.
Step 2
Raise your hands in the air over your head to initiate the slide. Never slide with your hands down on the ground. This can result in injury.
Step 3
Bend one leg in a figure four behind the other leg. It doesn't matter which leg you decide to bend and which you keep extended.
Step 4
Lean back as you approach the bag until your bottom hits the ground. Slide on your bottom as opposed to the side of your leg.
Step 5
Bend your extended leg slightly at the knee. If the leg is locked straight when it hits the base, you could injure your knee.
Step 6
Aim for the outside portion of the base to give yourself the best chance to avoid the tag. Fielders will stand on the inside portion since it creates the shortest distance from the thrower to the glove.
Step 7
Use your forward momentum and your extended leg to hop up onto the bag as soon as you hit it.
