Niacin, or vitamin B3, is a nutrient that is used by the body to convert carbohydrates into energy. Also known as nicotinic acid, it is found in foods such as yeast, meat, fish, milk, eggs, beans, cereal grains and green vegetables. Effect on Good Cholesterol
According to MayoClinic.com, one of the health effects of niacin is that it raises high density lipoprotein, or good cholesterol, by around 15 to 35 percent. Niacin also decreases the level of low-density lipoprotein, or bad cholesterol, in the blood. Niacin, along with other cholesterol-controlling medications, is also effective in reducing triglyceride levels. Low levels of LDL and triglycerides and high levels of HDL reduce the risk of heart disease.
Treatment of Pellagra
Deficiency of niacin can cause conditions such as pellagra. The individual with pellagra develops cracked, scaly and discolored skin. Digestive problems and body weakness are also present. Niacin and niacinamide are both used to treat pellagra.
Osteoarthritis

MedlinePlus also says that one of the beneficial health effects of niacin is that it lowers the risk of Alzheimer's disease. People who consume higher amounts of niacin are less prone to getting this aging-related cognitive impairment disease compared to people who consume less of this vitamin.
Other Effects
Niacin is used in the treatment of various circulation problems. It is also used for migraines and dizziness, and for the treatment of diarrhea.
