Side Effects of the Diet Pill Adipex-P

Adipex-P, or phentermine hydrochloride, is a prescription drug therapy used to treat obesity and usually is prescribed for no more than approximately 12 weeks in concert with regular exercise and a healthy diet. Adipex-P stimulates the central nervous system and suppresses the appetite so that the tendency to overeat is reduced, which results in weight loss. Adipex-P is similar chemically to amphetamines, which means it can be addictive; thus, it typically is prescribed for a few weeks to prevent addiction and serious long-term effects. This drug is associated with common short-term adverse effects.

Increased Energy and Euphoria

Due to overstimulation of the central nervous system by this medication, one frequent side effect, according to Drugs.com, is feeling an excessive amount of energy. This may be associated with other side effects that include feelings of restlessness, euphoria, and difficulty in sleeping or insomnia. Euphoria is an elevated mood where everything seems wonderful, even at times when they are not positive; again, because this drug is a stimulant, a patient's elated mood is exaggerated and excessive. Some individuals also may even experience tremors with feelings of nervousness. These side effects are considered mild and common for this drug. However, if these side effects do not subside or increase and become worrisome, the prescribing physician should be contacted.

Impotence

Some sexual side effects also are common reactions to starting this medication. For example, men may experience difficulty in getting or maintaining an erection. In both men and women, patients may notice a change in their sex drive or libido. These side effects are considered mild and temporary, and should diminish as the body gets used to the novel drug. The physician should be notified, however, if sexual problems persist.

Blood Pressure Changes and Headaches

Occasionally, some patients may experience an increase in blood pressure or hypertension, because phentermine produces narrowing of blood vessels known as vasoconstriction. Therefore, blood pressure should be monitored at the beginning of treatment, especially in those with a medical history of elevated blood pressure. These blood pressure changes, according to Drugs.com, may be associated with headaches and dizziness. Lying down periodically may help to alleviate these symptoms. During blood pressure checks, if hypertension exists and continues to be elevated after several days without signs of returning to normal, then the prescribing physician needs to be notified as soon as possible. Drug dosage may need to be adjusted.

Gastrointestinal Disturbance

The digestive, or gastrointestinal, system will be affected by the introduction of a stimulant such as Adipex-P into the body. According to RxList.com, one common side effect that may be experienced is diarrhea; on the other hand, some patients may complain of being constipated. These adverse, yet mild and temporary reactions, may be accompanied by stomach cramping; also, an excessive dry mouth as well as the sensation of an abnormal taste in the mouth may present. If diarrhea presents, dehydration needs to be prevented; thus if it continues, contact the doctor for evaluation.
