Arthritis, an inflammation of the joints, causes stiffness, swelling and pain. More advanced cases of arthritis can limit range of motion and curtail everyday activities. Physicians may prescribe medications to control pain and inflammation from the condition, or they may recommend arthritis sufferers go to physical therapy or undergo surgery to relieve pain. People with arthritis may also eat certain foods that provide pain relief.

Fish

Eating more fish may help arthritis sufferers find relief from pain. Fish contains an abundance of omega-3 fatty acids, believed to have anti-inflammatory properties. MedlinePlus reveals that taking fish oil supplements alone or in conjunction with the pain reliever naproxen appears to relieve stiffness from rheumatoid arthritis. Some arthritis sufferers may even reduce their use of pain medications as a result.

Brown Rice

Eating brown rice may help arthritis sufferers due to its selenium content. One cup of cooked brown rice provides 27.3 percent of the selenium needed each day, as determined by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. The human body uses selenium in immune system functioning. The George Mateljan Foundation for the World's Healthiest Foods notes that selenium combined with vitamin E helps decrease the the pain and inflammation of rheumatoid arthritis.

Ginger

Ginger may help reduce inflammation in the body. The root of this plant can be eaten raw or cooked, or it can be taken in supplements or as tea. The University of Maryland Medical Center cites a 2001 study published in "Arthritis & Rheumatology," which indicates that ginger may help people with arthritis use fewer pain medications and experience less pain.
