Skin wrinkling is a natural process that accompanies aging. As you get older, the fibers that give your skin its strength begin to break down, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. Gravity then pulls on the skin, and the result is folds in the skin known as wrinkles. While developing some level of skin wrinkling is inevitable, you can minimize wrinkle development using treatment creams at home that contain active wrinkle-fighting ingredients.
Types
A number of wrinkle treatment cream ingredients exist on the market and can be used at home. Prescription wrinkle treatment creams include topical retinoids, which are derived from vitamin A, according to the Mayo Clinic. When applied regularly, retinoid cream can reduce fine wrinkles. Nonprescription treatment creams include the ingredients retinol, alpha hydroxy acids, kinetin, coenzyme Q10, copper peptides and antioxidants. However, these active ingredients are not as concentrated as prescription ingredients and therefore may not be as potent.
Sun Exposure
One of the best wrinkle treatment lotions is available at your drugstore --- sunscreen. Sun exposure can be a major contributing factor to skin wrinkling, according to the American Academy of Dermatologists. To prevent skin wrinkling from progressing, apply sunscreen each day to avoid wrinkling from advancing. Wear sunscreen with a sun protection factor of 30 or higher to best protect the skin.
Side Effects
Read labels carefully when using a wrinkle treatment lotion. Some creams, such as those containing alpha hydroxy acids, may make you more susceptible to sunburn, according to the Mayo Clinic. Other common side effects of wrinkle lotions in general include skin irritation, rash, burning or redness. Lotion labels may warn you of possible side effects or advise you as to how to minimize these effects.
Application
Most wrinkle treatment creams need to be applied on a daily basis to be effective, according to the Mayo Clinic. Depending upon the product, ceasing the use of a wrinkle treatment cream may cause your skin to return to its previous state. If your wrinkle lotion does not contain a moisturizer, you may want to follow its application with a moisturizer. This will help keep the skin more supple and smooth.
Safety
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration considers wrinkle treatment creams as cosmetics, according to the Mayo Clinic. Under this classification, wrinkle treatment creams and their ingredients do not have to undergo rigorous testing to determine effectiveness and safety. This does not mean the product is necessarily hazardous to use, but it does mean that the FDA has not proven it to be effective.
