How to Use a Fentanyl Patch

Fentanyl is a powerful opioid, which means that it can be used as a narcotic pain reliever for patients who have moderate or severe chronic pain. Because fentanyl can also be very addictive, it is typically prescribed in the form of patches. These patches deliver a consistent amount of the medication to the skin, where it is absorbed. This helps reduce the potential for abuse and allows for long-term pain management.

Step 1

Choose an area of the skin where you would like to apply the patch. Look for a part of the skin that is smooth and healthy. Do not place fentanyl patches on skin that is damaged, irritated or has bumps and sores on it.

Step 2

Open the package just before you plan to use the patch.

Step 3

Holding the fentanyl patch by the edges, carefully remove the protective liner.

Step 4

Press the adhesive (sticky) side of the patch onto the area of the body where you want the patch to go. Press it firmly down for 30 to 60 seconds. Make sure that the edges of the patch are sticking firmly to the skin.

Step 5

After three days, change the fentanyl patch. Try to change your patch at the same time of day whenever you change pads to keep your medication levels constant.
