Throughout your pregnancy, your body produces progesterone, a hormone that relaxes the muscles of the uterus. Progesterone can also relax the valve that separates the esophagus from the stomach, causing the gastric acids to seep upward. Progesterone also slows digestion by slowing down the contractions of the esophagus and intestines. This, combined with the increasing size of the fetus, can push stomach acids into the esophagus and cause heartburn, also known as also known as acid indigestion or acid reflux. Prenatal heartburn usually is experienced in the third trimester.
Step 1
Eat a few small meals throughout the day, as opposed to three large meals. This will help alleviate pressure on your stomach.
Step 2
Eat yogurt or drink milk to reduce heartburn symptoms. The alkaline nature of these products can neutralize the acidity created by heartburn.
Step 3
Mix honey with your milk to reduce the symptoms of heartburn. Honey can coat and
soothe the lining of your esophagus.
Step 4
Chew gum after meals. This may stimulate the salivary glands, and the saliva can neutralize the acids that cause heartburn.
Step 5
Wear loose-fitting clothing. Tight-fitting waist bands, especially with a growing belly may contribute to heartburn.
Step 6
Eat at least one hour before lying down.
Step 7
Elevate your upper body with extra pillows. Sleeping in this manner might prevent stomach acids from traveling to your esophagus.
Step 8
Substitute water for coffee and carbonated beverages that may cause heartburn.
Step 9
Drink fluids in between meals, rather than during meals. Drinking during meals may distend your stomach and cause heartburn.
Step 10
Take chewable, over-the-counter antacids.
Step 11
Walk around your house or do light housework after eating. This will give your body a chance to digest your meal.
