Under-eye bags and dark circles can result from several causes. These include not sleeping enough or even lying down for too long, which New York dermatologist Francesca Fusco notes can cause fluid to pool under and around your eyes, causing them to get puffy. Hide your eye woes and look more refreshed by using at-home remedies as well as beauty products designed to treat the area around your eyes. Follow up with some makeup, and your eyes will look more open and revived.

Step 1

Place cold metal spoons over your closed eyes for a few minutes first thing in the morning. In "Cosmopolitan," Los Angeles aesthetician Kate Somerville states that this will help tighten up your under-eye skin, reduce puffiness and make your makeup go on smoother.

Step 2

Wash your face, pat it dry and apply an eye cream that contains ingredients like botanicals and vitamin C, which "Cosmopolitan" notes will help soothe skin, even out any discolorations and alleviate dark circles. Place a pea-sized amount on your ring finger and dot it under your eyes, then blend it in gently.

Step 3

Let the eye cream absorb for a few minutes, and then apply a yellow-based concealer. "Allure" states that this will normalize the blue tones of your dark circles. Dot the concealer over your dark circles using your finger or a small makeup brush, and then blend it in.

Step 4

Apply a skin-toned concealer or foundation that contains brightening ingredients and pigments that help reflect light. This will camouflage both puffy eyes and dark circles. Pat this concealer all around your eyes, and do not rub it too harshly, as this will remove the yellow concealer you just put on. Apply more product until you achieve your desired coverage.

Step 5

Keep your makeup in place all day by dusting your eyes with a loose powder. Dip a large makeup brush in the powder, tap off any excess and apply it to closed eyes.

Step 6

Wash your makeup off at night, reapply the eye cream and then sleep with your head propped up on an extra pillow. Both "Allure" and "Cosmopolitan" state that this will keep fluid from gathering beneath your eyes, which will help prevent baggy eyes in the morning.

Tips and Warnings

  • If you have allergies, ask your doctor about taking an antihistamine. New Jersey ophthalmologist Robert Mirsky states that allergens can cause under-eye swelling, and rubbing those areas can cause the bruising that leads to dark circles. Protect the skin around your eyes from sun damage by wearing sunglasses and sunscreen whenever you go outside. "Cosmopolitan" states that sun damage can cause both puffiness and dark circles. The magazine recommends applying a gentle sunscreen around your eyes as well.
