Glutamic acid, also called glutamine, is a nonessential amino acid that is produced by the body. Stored in the muscles, glutamine is involved in the metabolic processes of the body and converted glucose to when the body needs energy. Able to pass through the blood-brain barrier, glutamine is used as food for the brain and is necessary for body functions. If consumed in high doses, however, glutamine could result in unpleasant side effects.
Benefits
Vital Health Zone, a website addressing food nutrition, states that glutamic acid has been used to treat personality and behavioral disorders, epilepsy, muscular dystrophy and Parkinson's Disease. It is a remedy for hypoglycemic comas, heart disease, and benign prostate hyperplasia.
Kidney/Liver Disease
Since glutamic acid is an amino acid that is naturally produced by the body, it is not necessary to supplement it. Vital Health Zone states that there are no known side effects when supplementing with glutamic acid; However, high doses may cause headaches and neurological problems. If you have kidney or liver disease you should not take any high doses of amino acids without first consulting a doctor.
MSG
Monosodium Glutamate, or MSG, is the form of glutamic acid that is found in flavor enhancers. The Food & Drug Administration have stated that MSG is generally considered safe to consume, although some individuals may have mild sensitivity towards MSG. Individuals that have a sensitivity to MSG may have symptoms such as headache, weakness and nausea. Though some individuals may have mild side effects from consuming MSG, there is not enough data to determine if consuming MSG in large doses is a dietary hazard. Limiting the amount of MSG in your diet is the best way to avoid any symptoms that might occur.
