Ortho Tri Cyclen Side Effects

Ortho Tri Cyclen is a birth control pill that contains ethinyl estradiol and norgestimate. Some of the side effects associated with use of this drug are only an inconvenience, while others are serious and should be treated as an emergency.

Types

Some common side effects of Ortho Tri Cyclen include nausea, cramping, bloating, spotting, breast tenderness and migraines. Vaginal itching, vaginal dryness and changes in the menstrual cycle are also common.

Time Frame

In most cases, the side effects of Ortho Tri Cyclen begin during the first pack of the medication. Some side effects, such as temporary infertility, may last up to 6 months after the last dose.

Contraindications

Women with a history of heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, liver or gall bladder disease and those who smoke are at an increased risk of developing serious complications as a result of Ortho Tri Cyclen use. Allergic reactions are noted by a rash, fever, swelling (particularly near the mouth or eyes), itching and hives.

Missed Pills

If you miss an "active" dose of Ortho Tri Cyclen, you should take it as soon as you remember; however, if you miss multiple doses, you should contact your health care provider to determine the best way to get back on track. Even if you miss only one pill, pregnancy is a possibility and a backup method of birth control should be used.

Warning

Ortho Tri Cyclen doesn't prevent you from contracting sexually transmitted diseases, so you should use alternate methods to protect yourself.
