The Colorado River merges with the Virgin River when entering Nevada and then flows southward to the Hoover Dam. From the dam, the river continues to flow south until it creates the state line between Arizona and Nevada. This section of the river features fairly calm waters that are ideal for canoeing and kayaking.
Features
The Lower Colorado River is considered a more manageable section of the river than its northern counterpart due to the various reservoirs and dams that calm the waters. The flow of the lower section is approximately three miles per hour. There are several parts of the river that are rated as Class I rapids. There are numerous stretches, such as through the Black Canyon, that require extensive paddling.
Sights
When out canoeing on the Lower Colorado River, you will be in the heart of the desert landscape. When paddling, you will pass numerous historic and cultural sites, colorful rock formations and a variety of desert wildlife, particularly migratory birds and waterfowl. Along the Lower Colorado River, there are several natural waterfalls and hot mineral springs.
Considerations
When canoeing in the Lower Colorado River, you can expect to spend most of your time sitting in the boat enjoying the views, but there always is the chance that your boat will tip. Because of this, you should always wear a personal flotation device. It is recommended that individuals know how to swim before going canoeing.
Fees
There are several companies, such as the Boulder City Outfitters, that rent canoes and offer guided tours along the Lower Colorado River. As of 2010, canoes are available for rent starting at $35 for the day. A full-day paddling tour that launches from the base of the Hoover Dam, travels through hot springs and ends at the Black Canyon lasts 10 hours and costs $150 per person.
Weather
Canoeing on the Colorado River is available year-round. The summers tend to be dry and hot, and the winters are moist and cool. The hottest month in Boulder City is July, when the temperature averages 99 degrees Fahrenheit. The coolest months are December and January, when the average temperature during the day is 53 degrees Fahrenheit. The wettest months are March and August, but because of the desert climate, even during these months less than an inch of rain falls per month.
